While Keyspan has decided to close (at least) one of these
bugs, I see that my squawk remains unresolved. There is no
indication, however, that this has even been examined by
anyone on their staff. I'll notify the list upon any change
in status of this question. Here's the text of the posts
I've made:

The same software that fails with the 19W adapter under MacOS X 10.2
works with the 28x twin serial adapter. So, reviewing, 19W works under
MacOS 9, fails under MacOS X. The 28 twin adapter works under both
9 & X with the same software. All indicators point to the 19W and/or
the driver for it under MacOS X.

Driver version 1.4b9 works very unreliably on my Mac G4 Cube running
     MacOS X 10.2.x. The message "*** malloc[399]: Deallocation of a pointer
not malloced: 0xffffffff; This could be a double free(), or free()
called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment
variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug" appears in the console
window. The same adapter (19W), cable, and software work flawlessly to
communicate with the serial device when run under MacOS 9 (not Classic
--booted as MacOS 9) and with the latest driver for that OS.
