[meteorite-list] [IMCA] Fake Nantan :o( // Auction Deals

This is the future....makes total sense.

======

BTW, immediately following this past Sunday's auction I visited a friend who was ill and just returned to NYC---and didn't have a chance to write to the following: a superb 8.24g specimen of Mayo Belwa (aubrite/fall) from The Natural History Museum (London) did not sell. It did not even achieve a bid of $110/gram---including buyer's commission---and I can promise it will sell for far more in the future.

As I've long said, there is always a deal lurking at the traditional Natural History auctions.

All the best / Darryl

At this point I would simply be able to tell you if the sample is good or not (I probably would throw in a list of the major elements anyway), hence the "cheap" price. At this point, I am only attempting to cover my costs (X-ray tube wear, expense of trip to PO) not make a profit (I will be probably charging closer to $45 when i finally get my act together, but that would include a full report that has a picture of the sample, color graphs of the X-ray spectra returns, list of elements, etc).

> Hi Anne, I just got word tonight that a Nantan that I sold around a year ago, turned out to be a fake :o( The buyer was told by many that it didn't look real. So he sliced it. It had hole's and carbon looking matrix inside. It had a strong attraction to a magnet but the matrix didn't look like iron, it was heavy as such. If any remember seeing it, it looked like a potato. I bought it for my collection. I replaced it with a 7.5 kg piece, then I sold the smaller one in good faith. I'm refunding the buyer's money. Now I'm looking at the other's I have... This could be costly to me if they are also fake. I'm halting sales till I slice and etch them... I'd rather lose the money then know that I sold someone a fake. Knowing it's out there in a collection, from me would hurt and set heavy on me, a lot more than losing the money :o(
