Search for meteorite in Southern Siberia

07.05.2007, 14.31

BARNAUL, May 7 (Itar-Tass) - Experts of Kosmopoisk (Space Search)
organization and volunteers have begun search for a meteorite that fell in
the southwest of the Altai region on January 10, 2007. Hundreds of onlookers
within a range of 150 kilometers saw a huge fiery ball rushing down with a
loud sizzling noise.

"The search for the meteorite could not have been started earlier because of
deep snow and heavy frost," Kosmopoisk coordinator Vadim Chernobrov told
Tass.

The search expedition made its compound in a village of Kayaushka in the
Rodinsky district. The meteorite’s trajectory has been calculated, and
booklets titled "The Altai Meteorite" have been circulated among the
volunteers, Chernobrov said.

Earlier, a different meteorite had been found in the Altai region. A local
resident saw it by chance near a fence outside his house in the settlement
of Istimis of the Kluchevskoy district in April. First, the man used the
find from space to drive nails. After he heard about "Kosmopoisk" searching
for a meteorite the man told journalists about his find.

The meteorite was brought to the Barnaul Planetarium that decided to send
the space newcomer to Moscow. "The find dates back to an earlier period and
is not connected with the search for the meteorite that fell in January,"
senior expert of the Barnaul Planetarium Natalia Pavlova told Tass.
