99% of the black stuff ont he outside of the brown material is simply the 
oxidized metal veining that is seen int he matrix of this material. the 
material weathered preferentially allong the vetal veins and hence broke up 
allong the veins as well.

this stone must have been KILLER looking when it was fresh, but imho it 
still looks pretty darned neat even today.
