There is an issue with the OS X FTDI driver that requires one to unplug  
and re-plug the device after a reboot.
FTDI blames Apple - but the Keyspan drivers don't seem to have the  
problem.

FTDI has a rather complex workaround for this:

... but I find it easier to just unplug and replug the device after a  
reboot to force the USB controller to re-enumerate the FTDI device -  
then run the program that will be using the port.
