It could be just the Linux 'clx' gateways. They have a command:

SET/ALIVE [<char>]

This command switches on an anti-timeout poll, which sends your session a
<cr> every ten minutes "in an attempt to keep your connection alive during
quiet periods"

I have removed the 'ping' and we'll see if it effects the timeouts.
