Alphabet/Alef Bet:

Hebrew and Semitic Roots in the English Language

STARTS THIS MONDAY!

January 23 & 30 // 9:30 a.m. // Zoom

English is an Indo-European language and Hebrew is a Northwest Semitic
language. Strictly speaking, they could not be more different. But as 'no
man is an island,' so too no language is an island. As archeologists in
recent years have found, in antiquity there was much more commerce and trade
between the Middle East and other lands than was once imagined. And as goods
migrate, often enough the words describing them migrate as well. Presented
by Len Hausman, you are invited to discover English words whose origins, via
the Romance languages, may well lie the languages of the Levant - including
Hebrew!

The Barcelona Disputation: A Discussion

Thursday, January 26 // 8:30 p.m. // Zoom

The Barcelona Disputation (1263) was a watershed moment in the history of
medieval Jewish-Christian relations. Or was it? In this theological debate,
the Nahmanides (R. Moses ben Nahman, 1194-1270), arguably the greatest
rabbinic teacher and leader of his time, was called by King James of Aragon
to defend Judaism against arguments by Friar Pablo Christiani, a convert
from Judaism, that the rabbis of the Talmud recognized Jesus as the Jewish
messiah. For the church, this public disputation offered an opportunity to
test a missionizing strategy in a high profile public venue, but, if any,
were the consequences of this public disputation? This lecture will discuss
the religious, political, and social context in which the Barcelona
Disputation took place and modern interpretations of it. Please register
with Amanda.

Wednesday, January 25 // 7:00 p.m. // Zoom

Bookish People by Susan Coll is an entertaining novel set over one week in a
Washington DC bookstore. Narrated by two very different women and filled
with literary and political references, it is a rom com filled with a
diverse multigenerational cast of people who sell books, write books, love
books and/or people who love the people who sell, write and/or love books.

Discussion will be facilitated by Sara Sherman.

CBI Chanting Circle

The Art of the Nigun

Sunday, January 29 // 5:00 p.m. // CBI

This special edition of the chanting circle is going wordless! What is a
nigun if not a chant without words? Like chant, the nigun is powerful
centuries-old way of accessing a spiritual sensibility not otherwise readily
available to us. While our niguns will be contemporary, what they bring out
is timeless!
