Tisha B’Av Services at CBI

Tisha B'Av, the Fast of the Ninth of Av, is a day of mourning which
commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which
were destroyed on the ninth of Av. It is also appropriate to consider on
this day the many other tragedies of the Jewish people, many of which
occurred on this day, most notably the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in
1492.

Erev Tisha B’Av – Saturday, August 10 at 9:00 p.m.

Immediately follows Ma’ariv and Havdalah

We will read from the Book of Lamentations, also known as Eicha. This will
be chanted using special musical notations that create a tone of weeping and
mourning. Candles will be available for the reading of Eicha. Rabbi Resnick
will lead a short discussion on the “Meaning of Tisha B'Av in 2019.” Special
kinot will be read and we will join Cantor Wallach in the singing of Eli
Tzion.

Tisha B’Av – Sunday, August 11 at 8:00 a.m.

During the service on Tisha B’Av morning, special prayers of mourning,
called kinot, will be read.

Community Tisha B'av

Commemoration and Vigil

Sunday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m. in Newark

Peter Rodino Federal Building (972 Broad Street)

Join with Essex County synagogues for a community observance of Tisha B’Av
to mark the attempt to close America as a welcoming haven for immigrants and
asylum seekers and to call for justice and compassion for those being
detained. This alternative service will include a recitation of
Lamentations. The program is scheduled to last 60-75 minutes. You may want
to bring your own siddur if you want to daven.

Please let Rabbi Resnick know at <mailto:rabbiresnick at cbi-nj.org>
rabbiresnick at cbi-nj.org if you plan to attend this event.

EDGE Reboot

Last year we kicked off our new discussion group, EDGE, with a series of
fine presentations, mostly related to presenters’ vocations. As we look
forward to another year of meetings, starting in September, we’d like to
focus more on the “eclectic” part of these Eclectic Discussion Group Events.

Would you like to present on your avocation instead of your vocation? How
about etymology and insects I have loved and lost? Why is Sir Isaac Newton’s
favorite song “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,” and is it relevant today?

Other possibilities: Jewish GIs in WWII; how breaking the enigma code
shortened the war, saving millions of lives; finding mushrooms that won’t
kill you and other food endeavors you’ve completed successfully.

Or, best of all, a subject of your own choosing.

With the Internet as your partner, trips to the library are unnecessary.

All ideas and offers are welcome by email or phone!

Please contact Jeff and Marian Freedman at <mailto:jfreednj at aol.com>
jfreednj at aol.com or 908-754-7867.

Help Send Kids to Jewish Camps

The Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ’s Tour de Summer Camps NJ is a
community fundraising event with four amazing routes for cyclists of all
skill levels. Plus – Family Fun Day Activities!

Proceeds make it possible for more children across Greater MetroWest NJ to
have the life-changing experience of attending Jewish summer camp. Studies
show that summers spent at Jewish camp empower Jewish young people to become
spirited and engaged Jewish adults, thereby laying the groundwork for
strong, vibrant Jewish communities for future generations.
