Dear Friends:
By now I hope you are all aware of the survey sent out to families with
students in Millburn Township Public Schools by the Board of Education
concerning religious and cultural observances. The survey asks each family
to choose which observances it "anticipates" observing during the year. Six
holidays are listed. The Board of Education has specifically given its
consent to have each family choose as many days as they wish.
As a Rabbi of a Conservative congregation, I ask that if you are a resident
of Millburn/Short Hills with children enrolled in the public schools, to
vote for the Jewish holidays we observe: Both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur. As a resident of Millburn/Short Hills, a growing multi-cultural
community, I urge you to vote for all the days listed in the survey.
In the past several weeks, a multi-cultural committee representing the local
Indian, Chinese, Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities has formed. This
group is encouraging all members of our community to support each other, to
show respect for each groups' holidays and requesting the Board of Education
do the same.
In the interest of a unified approach representing both clergy and lay
leadership at Congregation B'nai Israel, the Board of Trustees has also
taken a position on the survey; a letter from the BOT will be forthcoming
shortly.
We have a unique opportunity to show communal support and send a message of
what type of community we aspire to become. Please join me in this
endeavor.
Sincerely,
Steven Bayar, Rabbi
