the code changes for #1 and #3 could possibly be wrapped/implemented in
the form of fixer scripts, just as Steven and Greg had done for the
switch to Python 2.4? One could add a little testing setup (based on our
current QMTest framework, and pylint maybe) for CI, ensuring that no
examples or tests are broken by the rewrites. This would make the task
easily scalable and open-ended in a way. Just as an idea...
