When you use a single font I assume you still have a problem.
The ttf fonts are supposed to be used with UTF-8 encoding as
the contributor of that code presumably felt that was appropriate.

I guess you need to find the characters for the code points you need in utf-8.

I don't have the arial maori fonts so I haven't a clue what will happen if you 
paste in ā etc etc.
