Greetings Meteorite Friends!

Here is a reminder that you are invited to an interesting talk at the UArizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory on Wed., October 18:
Here is another lecture of interest in the UA-LPL Evening Lecture Series. You may attend in-person, zoom or watch the recorded version later. In addition to an interesting lecture, in-person attendees may win one of several great door prizes. See below.

Best regards,

Dolores Hill

P.S. Come see where I've marked the diameter of Bennu's Hokioi Crater inside LPL's atrium! It was "big and important" to the OSIRIS-REx sampling mission but actually a very small target for the amazing flight dynamics team.

LPL Evening Lecture

Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023

7:00 p.m. (Tucson time!)

Kuiper Space Sciences Bldg. room 308 or zoom

University of Arizona

Tucson, AZ

Dr. Veronica Bray

Associate Research Professor, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory

The What If? Real-time Effects of a Bennu-Sized Asteroid Impact on Tucson

Geologic hazards, such as earthquakes and floods, are assessed based on their likelihood of occurrence and the devastation they cause when they do happen. The once-in-a-blue-moon hazard is meteor impact, which has the potential for global devastation. We can see evidence of incoming meteors as shooting stars and airbursts in the present, to dinosaur-killing and planet-disrupting events in the past. The study of asteroid Bennu with OSIRIS-REx helps us get to know our solar system neighbors and assists in the hazard assessment of future asteroid impacts. This lecture will present a blow-by-blow account of how Tucson would be affected by the impact of a Bennu-sized meteoroid.

This event is free and open to the public.

All lectures will take place in the University of Arizona Kuiper Space Sciences Lecture Hall, room 308 and livestream via Zoom<https://bit.ly/LectureVeronicaBray10182023>.

The Kuiper building is located at 1629 E. University Blvd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Parking in university surface parking lots is free after 5 p.m. Please be careful not to park in service or reserved spaces. Parking in the Cherry Avenue Garage is available after 5 p.m. at a cost of $1.00 per hour.
