It was on April Fools Day 2017 that I made my first “cold” find near a dry wash in Scottsdale Arizona. The perfect example of Preparation + Opportunity = Success. Not to mention a good helping of “Dumb Luck.”
With the help of fellow hunter Larry Atkins I was able to meet with the distinguished Dr. Laurence Garvie, Curator and Research Professor for the Center of Meteorite Studies, Arizona State University.
It is now classified and listed under The Meteoritical Society as the Scottsdale Meteorite, a beautiful LL3 chondrite. A relatively recent fall with a Weathering Grade W1. Click on this link (or copy & paste) to view official listing: https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=67599
It is a gorgeous specimen that I will be auctioning off soon (within the next two weeks). The weight before specimens were taken was officially 210.8 grams (remaining weight approximately 180 grams). I’ll have an accurate weight of the remaining specimen shortly.
