Aloha meteorite lovers,

An exciting new feldspathic diogenite has been approved by the Meteoritical Society as NWA 8744. The stoneʻs external surfaces were observed to have a very frothy texture. Upon cutting cutting and polishing, the stoneʻs vesicular texture was discovered. Swirls of melt material mix percolating around islands of plagioclase. Clasts of blocky orthopyroxene suspended in milky plagioclase - very surreal. And vesicles or vugs permeate the stone, not unlike Dʻorbigny or Ibitira. Dr Tony Irving reports this stone as a melt-matrix breccia consisting of clasts (~30 vol.%) of orthopyroxenitic diogenite, feldspathic diogenite and noritic diogenite (with 10-40 vol.% plagioclase) plus related crystalline debris within a predominant, very fine grained, vesicular matrix. All orthopyroxene is turbid and pale clove brown in thin section and is notably ferroan; calcic plagioclase (anorthite) is polycrystalline. Some orthopyroxene contains irregular "patches" of clinopyroxene. Accessory phases are chromite, olivine and minor troilite blebs in orthopyroxene.
