Hello All,
The Earth's most abundant mineral has finally been named: bridgmanite.
Scientists had known about the mineral for decades, but being located
deep below the Earth's surface, the mineral had only been studied
indirectly. However, this gap in the taxonomy of Earth minerals was
resolved when the natural mineral was identified and subsequently
studied in the Tenham meteorite, which hit Queensland, Australia in
1879. This led to the official name approval earlier this month, after
the 1946 Nobel winning Percy Bridgman known for his work on high
pressure physics.
