Unless you want a 10-year jail sentence here in the U.S., I would avoid 
picking up anything found on public land.  Meteorites and cultural property 
(used to mean artifacts, antiquities or relics) are now interchangeable terms thanks to 
Douglass Schmidt and recent media!
