Here's the relevant law for South Australia;

It covers any meteorite found on South Australian land, so privet
property is not excluded. The only possible loop hole I could see
would be if the meteorite lodged its self in a man made object, like a
car. The act defines relevant meteorites as "This Part applies to a
meteorite, being any naturally occurring object other than a tektite,
that has fallen from beyond the atmosphere to earth in this State
(whether before or after the commencement of this Part).". So
technically, a meteorite wedged in a car has not fallen to the
"Earth". After all, Neil Armstrong was only considered the first man
on the Moon after he stepped off a lander already resting on the
surface.
