About the Curiosity landing, Paul Gessler wrote,

“I wish someone would have removed the bottle
of peanuts above the altitude control station.”

The bottle of peanuts is part of the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory‘s “peanuts tradition” that they practice
for good luck during a landing. Eating peanuts for
good luck is a practice that began with Ranger 7
and has since continued.
