[meteorite-list] New type of fake moldavite coming soon?

That's correct. The fakes have been out for several years now. See:
http://imca.cc/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=28&Itemid=116.

But the fakes have come a long way now since then too with very professional
pieces being created. I've heard of some pieces that can only be determined
by testing like Randy mentioned and are virtually impossible to detect
visually.

Cheers,

Jeff

Thank you Yinan,

However this is not new.
Several years ago (4-5-6 years???) one of my customers had the occasion to
go to Hong Kong. While there he saw "moldavites" being sold in many shops,
of course they were the apple-green type, and very very cheap, so he bought
a
couple of them for me, and I still have them.
Yes, they are a very bright shade of green, not at all like moldavites, and
look worn, like tumbled.
And I believe he might have been the one who told me that someone in Hong
Kong had bought a lot of very good moldavites (real ones!) then had molds
made from them and went into production.
And remember, that was several years ago.

And thank you for telling us about the Fakeminerals site, but he should
have a page or more about fake meteorites.

My buddy Justin at The-Vug just put out a new article on
Fakeminerals.com about a new type of fake moldavite that has been
recently spotted in China:

I'm not sure if this is the material people are already familiar with,
or if it is indeed a new type, but it's impressive looking.
