I agree. As explained, this will usually save buyer $ due to the other bidder not having time to cave in and say "I want it bad enough to spend just a bit more" and push final price up even though he will not win. 

A well timed snipe allows you the best bid amount for your max bid.

Sniping is simply a strategy that capitalizes on the fact that the
vast majority of people are unlikely to monitor online auctions (of
which they are a participant) in the closing minutes. As a result,
whatever limit bid, X, the leading bidder has established can easily
be trumped in the final seconds by another bidder bidding X+delta,
where delta is the minimum differential bid. Experienced eBay buyers
employ this strategy at all times, whether in person or through a
