Chris:
     It would be easier to accept your position if the incident had not occurred in the equatorial belt which has recently changed radically in appearance.  I'm not rejecting the impact hypothesis, only that it is an interesting coincidence.  However unlikely, I can't abandon the ejection view, such as the phenomena we see above earth from lightning.
