[meteorite-list] Safely removing caliche?

I picked up a few small oriented Taza from Geoff N. yesterday. One, the size and shape of a canine tooth, has a partial coating of what appears to be caliche around the middle.

I'm not ready to take a wire brush to it just yet, but I was wondering if there is another (non mechanical) way to remove it without affecting the surface below?
