Dear List Members,
For those of you who may be passing through Laughlin, Nevada, U.S.A. on the way
to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, you may want to stop by the Clouds Jamboree
one month long Gem and Mineral Show. It is a fairly small show compared to
Tucson but a lot of fun. There are a lot of old timers that know what they are
talking about and are a big help answering questions, especially great places to
prospect for meteorites since a lot of them are true desert rats (meant in a
positive way) and know their way around. They know how to get to sites with
four wheel drive that are so remote, most believe you would need a helicopter to
get in. The town board and economic advisory committee is talking about making
it a major event spanning several major hotels two years from now to increase
attendance to over 100,000. I kind of like it small and laid back since we
already have several major events including the largest biker rally on the West
Coast, a huge rodeo and the Score off-road Desert Races.
Most of the show is outdoors at the palm tree laden Avi Hotel on the river and
it runs the entire month of January. There are over 22,000 clean hotel rooms
here in town and most are bargain priced this time of year, some as low as
$29.95 /night. Not bad considering most have a wonderful view of the Colorado
River, water taxis and all of the free alcohol you can consume 24 hours a day, 7
days a week if you gamble a little bit. For those who like to gamble, you can
freely give over your money to the many casinos or better yet, take a gamble on
odd looking rocks. The Grand Canyon is only a couple of hours away or a few
minutes away from a major petroglyphs site. The weather is usually perfect for
meteorite hunting and there is nothing but desert, mountains, the river and lake
Mojave as far as the eye can see.
