The Schlieren effect is produced by variations
in the index of refraction in a material, often
associated with differences in density if the
material is homogeneous in composition but
can be produced by changes in composition
as well, or by temperature effects or pressure or...

Schlieren photography uses the Schlieren effect
to render the differences in refraction visible. Here's

And not necessarily to the meteoric material contained in LDG;
schlieren generally applies to the visible differences in density
apparent in layers and ripples in impact glasses, as well as other
substances. In fact, in tektites, this usually applies to areas
richer in SiO2 - not meteoric material.
