Let's call this "Bob Haag Day"! I met him for the first time this Feb. in Tucson. He was incredibly nice to me even though I consider him somewhat of a "star" complete with his own entourage. He even kissed me on the cheek. I'm a fan for life!

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Question For The List ???? WHO IS THE BEST ANDMOST SUCCESSFUL METEORITE HUNTER OUT THERE?
Greg,
You had written in part:
" I don't know whether Bob Haag is the best hunter/collector, but I can tell you that he is the nicest guy you could want to know... "
You got that right! Way back in 1986, I first saw Robert Haag on the David Letterman Show. I was stunned to find out an "ordinary person" could actually buy and own a meteorite. I contacted him the very next day and ordered a few meteorites from him. He was out of stock on one of them and so he sent me a major upgrade on a similar specimen ( a much larger and nicer pallasite slice, for the same price.)
Then a bit later, when I found out he had actually hunted for and found some meteorites himself on a few trips, I was on the phone to him several times getting advice. I can see now that I was probably a bit of a pest, I must admit, but he never had anything but patience for me.
I have talked with him on the phone and in person in Tucson many, many times now, and he has not changed in that regard. I was very happy that I had a chance to spend some time with him at West, and on a beer run to a liquor store together, I made sure he knew that HE was THE force behind me having had the thrills of finding my very own meteorites over about a half-dozen trips. Because of his help, my best friend and I have had the unbelievable luck of finding over 2,100 specimens totaling over 500 lbs on these few trips. Though there are definitely many others who have found more than me, I NEVER, NEVER would have thought that would have been possible when I was a young boy growing up in the cotton fields in NE Arkansas, and wishing that one day.... ONE day .... I would find an actual REAL meteorite there in the ground. And it all started with this "wildly enthusiastic kid" on the David Letterman show, who took the time to help a newbie.
Sincerely,
Robert Woolard
