"i got an estherville that has a crystal about 3/8" across w/ a pronounced, highly
reflective, (if not perfect) clevage plane. what type of mineral might this be?"

If it is greenish and translucent, my vague guess would be pyroxene
(hypersthene) but it's hard to tell without photos and close-up pics.

This crystal might also be olivine!

If opaque it might be a chromite crystal.
