KU Natural History Museum to Identify Visitors' Treasures

The University of Kansas Natural History Museum is calling all amateur
rock hounds, fossil hunters and meteorite enthusiasts for an
identification day event on Sunday, Oct. 21.

"What on Earth? Rocks, Fossils and Meteorites"
will give visitors the opportunity to bring items from their home
collections to KU experts for identification. While visitors are there,
they will have the chance to see examples of Kansas fossils, learn about
Kansas geology and learn how to identify a meteorite.

"Many of the fossils people bring us to be identified are the bones from
the neighbor's cow or horse, or even rocks," said Larry Martin, curator
of vertebrate paleontology. "But every once in a while, someone brings
in a special find that we are very excited to see."

Some of those objects will be on display at the museum during the event,
including bones from ancient bears and big cats that local fossil
hunters found on the Kansas River. Also on display will be dozens of
invertebrate fossils such as ammonites, oysters, clams and sponges, and
examples of Kansas "sea monster" fossils such as the full paddle of a
plesiosaur.

The free event is from 1 to 4 p.m. at the museum, 1345 Jayhawk
Boulevard. Call (785) 864-2344 for more information or visit the Natural
History Museum's Web site.
