Hi Tracy,

Glad to hear you're OK following Sunday morning's 6.6 temblor. One
thing I've been wondering about is how all the big observatories
faired up on top of Mauna Kea? --Rob

Subject: [meteorite-list] Earthquake in HI

WE got jolted out of bed this morning at 7:08 by what they are now
reporting
as a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, about 18 miles from Kailua-Kona on the
Big
Island. There was another quake about 7 minutes afterwards, about 5.8,
and
18 or so aftershocks so far, mostly too small for us to feel here.

Some things fell off of shelves here in Maui (Kihei), minor structural
damage in some places, and there are landslides on some roads. Big
Island,
closer to the epicenter has sinkholes, landslides, and they are
reporting
that a couple of the big box stores had ceiling collapses. We were
prepared
to bug out if a tsunami was forecast, but none resulted. We were
without
power until about 10 minutes ago while the electric companies reset and
tested all the breakers that had flipped; most of the Hawaiian Islands
had
no power for at least a while. We blew at least one UPS at home, and
are
testing our computers. Reports are still coming in about damage across
the
islands. Only minor injuries have been reported.

WE can report largely shaken, but not stirred, and I am going to go make
our
first batch of caffeine for the day -- we need it!

Tracy Latimer
