Joe,
Please take a look at the following link with videos of the Peekskill Fireball
http://aquarid.physics.uwo.ca/~pbrown/Videos/peekskill.htm

The videos are from 7 different states. This will give an idea of how close a fireball looks and how far away it really is.
Did your friend say it passed and exploded right over head?

When the Park Forest, Il. Meteorite fell in 2003 it was about 30 miles from my home and I didn't hear one sonic boom or anything.
Like most meteorite collectors Ive grown accustomed to keeping an eye on the sky at night. Ive seen several fireballs in the last few years, a couple very large ones too. While they get the heart pumping we all know if you didn't hear it then its far away. The best that you can do is keep an eye on the media.

Good Luck
Bob

A friend of mine just called me and told me that they just saw a fireball over LaSalle county at about 9:30 pm on 5/22/2006. He said the fireball was white and the tail was redish orange. He said they heard whistleing. They said it lasted for about 45 sec.(may be an exageration he was excited).

Tomarrow I will be going out to hunt for it. I sure hope noeone finds it first. At least I hope I can find a piece.
When he called I heard other people in the background describing it to other people, they sounded very excited I was the first person they called because they know I am a meteorite huning fool. I can't wait to hunt this down. Hopefully there is a new strewn field, I doubt it but I am keeping my fingers crossed, one can dreamcan't he?
Does this sound like it might be a meteorite fall? If so what are the chances of it landing to Earth as a meteorite?
Did anyone else hear about this or wittness it? If so what is your story and where was it whitnessed and at what time?
  Thanks,
  Joe Kerchner
