Hi, all,

The above revives a question I've long wondered about, but never seen a
specific reference to:

Considering the oxygen, hydrogen, and iron content of some stony meteorites,
does any, even minutely, oxidation occur in space?
Or are the meteorite's gas isotopes of a type that just won't cause rust
until it hits earth's atmosphere?

Cheers,
Pete

Hehe! I am not a musician and I must be the only
person who didn't think "guns 'n' roses" or the like
when they read METALLIC ROCK.

I didn't understand Jerry's point until I got to the
end and re-read the subject line. I'm kicking myself
for being so stupid.

I have an excuse, though. I was asked yesterday by our
Island's curator to look at a "Metallic Rock" (I
didn't thing music then either) handed in by someone
who found it appeared in their garden about 7 years
ago. I'm taking a look at it in a couple of weeks so
I'd thought I'd read this thread as it may help me.

Don't get excited. The guy said it's spherical.
I'm likely to ask for help if I can't identify it,
though I suspect I will be able to instantly dismiss
it as a meteorite. (It had rust-like patches on it
when it was found...doesn't sound like a fresh iron
find to me!)
