Dear Friends and Listees:

I propose that we try to help somebody in New Orleans, in our own small
way.

Martin came up with a brilliant idea, which nobody commented upon. He
suggested that we auction a piece of the New Orleans meteorite on Ebay,
and donate the proceeds.

I have a beautiful small, illustrated, Riker mount display with 10 tiny
fragments of the New Orleans meteorite which my good friend Rob Wesel
of Nakhla Dog Meteorites made, and gave to me for my birthday. I
treasure it, but would gladly put it up on Ebay, with Rob's permission
(Rob, would that be okay with you?).

All proceeds would go to the Red Cross, and the winning bidder can pay
the Red Cross directly, instead of paying me. I would also include a
collection card and a one-of-a-kind certificate for the winner. I pay
postage.

Here is a photo of a very similar item, from Rob's website:

I will obviously take a photo of the real item. I would appreciate some
feedback on this idea. Anyone interested in bidding for a good cause?

If you want to do something here are three options:

1) The Red Cross needs donations to help with rescue, first aid, and
emergency shelters. You can easily give online:

http://www.redcross.org

2) MoveOn.org-Democracy in Action has organized a massive grass roots
rescue program to provide free beds and temporary homes for displaced
persons, through their Hurricane Housing site. This is an example of
ordinary American people at their absolute best: providing shelter for
total strangers. Only those within a 350 mile radius of the emergency
zone are being asked to help at this point:

3) If you are dissatisfied with the political situation in the United
States, you can get involved here:

Sincerely,

Geoff N.
