[meteorite-list] A giveaway, an ad, and a commentary

At the risk of annoying anyone who doesn't like to hear Steve's endless
giveaway posts, I have a few micros to hand out myself. I would give them
to a school, but since they are micros, they are less than impressive,
despite being uncommon types. You have seen them in one of my previous
posts: a .15g piece of NWA 1879 (MES, anom), a .05g piece of NWA 060 (CK5),
and a 6g piece of Darwin Glass, free to a good home. I'll even pick up the
postage within the US. I have bigger pieces of NWA that I give out to kids
when I talk about meteorites at schools or the library. If there is no
response, I will not bring them up again to the List.

That being said, I also have some storage/display boxes for sale. I bought
them from a seller in Australia who got their measurements confused, and
sending them back would cost me more than the boxes are worth. The boxes
are clear plastic on top, white opaque plastic beneath, 7cm x 5.5 cm x about
2cm deep; they have a little jump ring on the top, and apparently were used
for jewelry display or some such. I thought they were the tiny boxes for a
pair of stud earrings, which would have made them great for my tiny micros,
but I was wrong. $5 for 10, or 30 for $10, plus $1 for postage inside the
US. I can take Paypal. Again, if no response, I'll not bring them to the
List again.

Thirdly, I ignore the blog, having been there once and seen the type of
puerile crap that is the stock in trade. Its main function, despite the
best intentions of its owner, seems to be in keeping the spew of its
contributors from spilling over onto this site, which still happens every so
often.

Fourthly, yes, bad things happened in the past, such as the Barringer land
grab/ crater research (depending how you want to look at it). This goes
for many things; humans can be quite the nasty bunch, particularly to each
other. HOWEVER, I am not the one personally responsible for the Nazis, the
killing off of Native Americans as settlers moved west, the overthrow of the
Hawaiian monarchy, exploitation of slaves in various parts of the world,
etc. etc. We can't change the past, and making restitution for every mean
thing our ancestors have done to each other becomes difficult, if not
impossible and a little silly, after several hundred years. The German part
of me would find it hard to compensate the Hungarian part of me for things
that happened during WWII. All we can do is acknowledge it, try to prevent
the bad parts from happening again, and move on.

I will undoubtedly be flamed for this. Sorry for anyone I offended; I'm
attempting to be logical and reasonable.

Meteorites are good.
Tracy Latimer
