Ryan,

Try to imagine waking up and finding hundreds of fresh meteorite fragments
scattered in the grass in your front lawn. For me this is where I spent the
first day of the fall. It took me 10 hours to clean out the majority of
these fragments from the lawns.
Whats amazing is that there were other people searching along side of me and
my wife. They would find a few and leave to look elsewhere. Even though the
impact in the street was apparent and the volume of fragments scattered was
obvious. But, you had to get on your knees and sift through the grass. Many
of the frags were smaller than a gram. I only wish I had a large magnet that
day. I would certainly have found considerably more, they would have popped
right out of the grass.
As we searched there was a helicopter hovering above more than likely
looking for a impact crater. Not many people were there yet. Steve Witt was
already on the scene hunting and offering cash for finds. This was the most
opportune time. I was paying $1/gram and less for some specimens. Not many
to buy at this point though. There was a guy on Winslow St. that came up to
me and questioned what I was doing , I discussed meteorites with him for a
few minutes and then went back to sifting the grass. A few minutes later the
man came up to me with several frags in his hand ( maybe 20 grams ) and
handed them to me. I just gave him a strange look and he told me he didn't
want them. After this things would only get more competitive. Everyone was
on their way. I didn't even know about the list when PF fell.
The following day I met Mike farmer for the first time on Winslow St. He had
purchased his first fragment from Chris Gasco.
Mike and I headed over to Olympia Fields to investigate the Phil Jones
stone. No luck there we checked the police station, they said they didn't
have it. Apparently Phil Jones was wiser than the rest. He didn't see any
reason to drop off his treasure at the police station. The stone was
actually with his wife at his kids gradeschool for a little show and tell.
Mike and I wound up back at Winslow St. and got into a bidding war with a
local guy who basically drove the price up from $1/gram to $10. Mike and I
were royally pissed it after that. Mike did win the bidding war though. He
got some nice large specimens for around $2,000. I think he got close to a
kilo from that purchase.

Well, off to Easter breakfast. I did want to take a pic of this 62 gram PF
frag that I have that has a little bit of everything( Imbedded tree bark,
vinyl siding imbedded in the crust and regmaglypts) to share with everyone
as well as more stories of the PF experience.

Have a great Easter everbody !!

Bob
