You are right. They are probably rusty haloes around the metal inclusions. I was
looking at my slice at 16x and 32x power with my microscope today and I actually
found a few tiny, elongated specks that are either troilite-like aggregates or maybe
some of those elusive zircons. Their color was a bit too "golden-yellow" for troilite
or some other iron sulfide. Less commonly, zircons also show yellowish hues.
