2. Frequency of Meteorite Falls
Eleven years of data from the MORP network were
previously analysed to derive the frequency of
meteorite falls on Earth as a function of mass
(Halliday, Blackwell and Griffin; Meteoritics, 24,
173-178, 1989). This paper was followed by two
independent studies of the numerous finds from
wind blowouts in Roosevelt County, New Mexico
(Zolensky et al., Meteoritics, 25, 11-17, 1990 and
G.R. Huss, Meteoriticsq, 25, 41-56, 1990).
These latter papers found very high infall rates that
are quite incompatible with the MORP experience, We
submitted a further paper on the problem that passed
the referee stage early in 1991. Preprints of two
further papers then appeared that showed the residence
times of the meteorites in New Mexico were several
times the previously accepted upper limit, essentially
removing the discrepancy, Our paper, with an added
note on this development, should appear in
Meteoritics, 26, no, 3, September 1991.
