METEOR FRAGMENT FOUND BY A FARMER AFTER EXPLOSION

     FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Dec. 27, - (AP) - A five-pound fragment of a fiery 
meteor which was observed in four Southwestern states was being studied 
today by scientists at the University of Arkansas.
     The fragment, a part of the celestial visitor that blazed its way in a 
southeasterly direction across the noon-day sky yesterday, fell near a herd 
of cows on a farm four miles west of here. Ray Bristow, farmer, who said he 
felt a “breeze” as three balls of fire passed nearby, recovered the 
fragment. It had hurled itself two and one-half feet in the ground.
     Bristow said he believed it was the smallest of the three fragments he 
saw. He was unable to locate the others.
     Davis Richardson, assistant professor of mathematics and astronomy at 
the university, planned to analyze the fragment today. He said a surface 
examination shows it to be a grey stone with possibly some iron.
     The passing of the meteor was reported from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma 
and Arkansas. Some persons believed the phenomenon to be a burning airplane.
