'Meteorite' Falls In Farm Field
VENICE - What appears to have been a small meteorite fell into a field
on the Harold Maassen farm on Poplar Ridge Road here Saturday.
Maassen told The Post-Standard he and his family were awakened by the
noise of the impact which, he said, shook his home, located near the field.
He said he did not see whatever fell into the alfalfa field but noted
that the impact had created a hole four feet deep and approximately seven
feet across.
State police were called to investigate and photographed the scene.
They reported that they planned to return Monday and dig in the hole to see
if a meteorite can be found as several inches of loose dirt fell into the
"crater" obscuring whatever might have struck the ground there.
Maassen said he did not dig up the area because he felt that the state
police should be allowed to investigate it and he did not want to disturb
the scene.
He said when he first heard the noise he thought that someone was
setting off dynamite, but he noted that an area around the hole of about 20
feet the grass and grain had been burned to the ground. He said this would
not have happened with an explosion.

PDF copy of this article, and most I post (and about 2/3'd of those on my
website), is available upon e-mail request.
The NPA in the subject line, stands for Newspaper Article. The old list
server allowed us a search feature the current does not, so I guess this is
more for quick reference and shortening the subject line now.
