New Detector May Take Role In War At Sea

COLUMBUS, O. Nov. 25. - (UP) - Possibility of locating "noiseless"
submarines by a meteorite detector designed by Ohio State University
educators is under investigation by Canadian and American sources.
The detector's importance increased following German claims of
underwater craft with sound-proof engines which, if true, would destroy the
usefulness of standard hydrophones for locating submarines.
Designed and perfected by Prof. Lincoln La Paz, Ohio State
mathematician, the detector has been used in the last two years in search
for meteorites buried in the earth. Its possible use of a submarine
detector is under consideration by officers of the U.S. Navy and Dr. R. W.
Boyle, director of the National Research Council of Canada.
"A model exhibited at the Ohio State Fair indicated that the instrument
will function almost as well when operated over metallic masses submerged in
salt water as when used on metallic meteorites buried in the earth." he
explained.
The instrument gives two-fold warning of the presence of hidden
meteorites. First a signal is heard over connecting earphones and then a
needle on a dial indicates the meteorite's presence.
