I too have lost out many times to snipers, but I look at it this way....

If I am interested in an item, and I personally determine that I am willing to pay a maximum of $X for it, then I will submit a bid in the amount of $X.

If someone else bids more than $X, either a day before the auction ends, or two seconds before it ends....what's the difference?  They were willing to spend more than I personally decided that the item was worth.  

That doesn't mean I won't be disappointed in losing the item, but if it goes for more than I personally felt it was worth to me, that was my decision.
