Lights in sky reported over at least five states

FORT WORTH (AP) -- An apparent meteor shower lit up the night sky 
from Texas to western Tennessee Wednesday night, prompting a flood 
of reports to law enforcement officers throughout a five-state region.

Several residents from Kerens called the Corsicana Daily Sun 
Wednesday night to report the siting. "It looked like something 
bigger than an airplane," Bobby Boucher told the paper.

"Whatever the object was, it had to be pretty high up in the sky and 
pretty big for such a large area of people to have seen it," 
weather service forecaster Mike Berry in Shreveport, La., said in a 
story in Thursday's Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Said John Clabes, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration,
"The thing was seen from Memphis through eastern Oklahoma as far 
north as Tulsa and down to the Houston air route center."

The lights flashed across the sky shortly after 9 p.m. in portions 
of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Tennessee.

"I never saw anything that large fall out of the sky," said Jeff 
LaCroix, who spotted what appeared to be a fireball over the Fort 
Worth sky. "It traveled all the way across the sky until it burned 
itself out close to the ground."

Clabes said the spotting was obviously a meteorite. "I think it's 
probably a shower. Instead of one, it's probably several," he said.

A spokesman for the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said the 
sightings were not tied to a weather event.

"The front part was fiery red and it had a greenish glow behind it 
and a long red tail," Barbara Hays, who lives in Bossier Parish, 
La., told Shreveport television station KSLA.
