Pardon my use of less eloquent scientific terminology... but "Looks like a
Duck, Quack's like a duck...."  oh, and that overused, but historically
valuable "The simplest answer tends to be the correct one".. 

Why is it that new scientists tend to elect complicated and convoluted
reasons for things that are so obvious in nature. (could it be journal
time?) Just look at the craters on all of those non-atmospheric planets for
evidence that we are, and have always been target fodder for any and every
piece of floating rock in the solar system. Unless there is undisputed
evidence for the other, the 'flying rock' has to get the honor until someone
shows that it was otherwise - conclusively.

A recent paper in Earth and Planetary Science Letters
disputes interpretations that argue that a major comet
impact caused global climatic changes, which coincides
with the Paleocene-Eocene (P-E) Boundary. Instead,
this
paper, Schmitz et al. (2004) concluded:

" The environmental perturbations at the Paleocene-
Eocene boundary appear to have been triggered by 
basaltic volcanism, but any model for the detailed 
causal relation remains speculative."
