On W7AY's recommendation I tried out SparkFun's USB to RS232 Converter:

I'm using it with the Prolific drivers available here:
<http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31>

It's been running here for several days with MacLoggerDX V5.23 under Snow Leopard and an IC-7000.
0.0% error rate and no problems.
