sory to hear about your mac troubles, yes Don is correct, i had some
simular problems getting a lightning hit .

however i was able to recover all my data .

I happened to have a powerbook, which is a nightmare to dissasssemble.

I'll email you directly a web site i have at the office, that
describes how to take apart most machines, however i must warn you
that i was told the ibook is simular to the pb in that they are both
very difficult to take apart

i had a apple cert person w/experience taking them apart spend hours
doing it i supervised so he wasn't wasting time or unskilled.

(i also have a ibook)

the keyboard on the ibook removes easily, on the top part of the
number keys are to 'blank things' they are keybd snaps you can
easily remove the keyboard. if your hasa screw in the middle it's
usually loose, but it's not a real screw it's like a 1/2 turn thing
some also have magnets holding it in

rather than just water, wich certain components should never see like
the drives buy some professional cleaners like superwash or equivalant

make sure the battery is removed immediately even if you don't fix it
yourself

you can also google ibook dissembly how to

their are many sites

My best advice would be for you to have a apple authorized place that
is familiar w/ibooks work on your machine, it won't be cheep

I'd doubt the data on the hd is bad your hope of recovering it is
prob betther than 95%

the apple store also has a 'data recovery' service, t's a 1st step
they have 2 kinds one might involve trying to boot your machine asa
afirewire drive and porting your data over to another disk or
machine est $150

apple stores won't typically open notebooks, i could be wrong about
the ones in your area the nyc ones won't for certain

if you send the notebook back to apple they typically won't return to
u the 'bad' part in this case a harddrive, BE WARNED which you could
then send to a data recovery place I found lazerous the cheepest
drive savers had high ratings but never used either.

your best alternative if the store cant 'fix' it there or recover the
data is to have them recomend to you a apple ibook certified repair
shop or person they keep a list so does the 800#

those guys can attempt a repair, prob should do it w/ a cleaning,
and if not they can just remove the HD for you put it into a fw
case try to read it, if not your last hope might be a drive repair
place they will charge anywhere from 400-2000 your situation
i'd guess more towards the low end

wish you the best of luck i'll email u the repair url page later
when at office

do you use ehams or lotw ? if so you might have some data retrievable
