Misunderstood Country on Earth, by Noa Tishby, which provides a clear and
readable account of Israel's history while debunking many misperceptions and
providing clear perspective for us to better understand Israel. We will
discuss ways in which we can be better equipped to enter conversations with
factual evidence that supports Israel and the Jewish people.

Death in Jewish Tradition and Lore with Len Hausman

Monday Mornings November 20, 27 and December 4 // 9:30 am // Zoom

There is no more uncomfortable subject than death, even more so in these
times. Rituals and practices around death are a window into a culture's
beliefs and views not just of death, but also of life. They can be viewed as
psychological defense mechanisms to soften the reality of death and pain of
loss for the bereaved. They function as guides to how a community supports
those in grief. While there is no one way to mourn, they offer a roadmap for
of the those who have lost a loved one. Exploring what Jewish tradition has
to say about death is fascinating. While our rituals and practices have
evolved some over the centuries, their basis has not. We have centuries-old
Halacha - Jewish law - surrounding death, but there is also a fair dose of
folklore and even superstition in the mix. And surprisingly, a number of our
rituals are also seen in the practices of other cultures.

Bookends With Sisterhood Returns!

Thursday, January 4th // 7:00 pm // In-person and on Zoom

We will be discussing Kantika by Elizabeth Graver.

Elizabeth Graver began writing her fifth novel,
<https://www.amazon.com/Kantika-Novel-Elizabeth-Graver/dp/1250869846>
Kantika, in 2014, but the Turkish Sephardic dressmaker at the heart of the
multi-generational, continent-spanning saga has been with her for a
lifetime. That’s because she was inspired by Graver’s maternal grandmother,
Rebecca (née Cohen) Baruch Levy.

The discussion will be moderated by Sara Sherman.
