CBI Sisterhood Rosh Chodesh Program – A Moment of Gratitude

Thursday, November 16th // 6:30 pm // CBI

This has been a particularly painful time for us as Jews. We must
acknowledge that. But we must also make room for hope and gratitude.

Psalms, prayers, poetry, and classic texts point us toward an attitude of
gratitude.

Join Rabbi Helaine Ettinger for a Sisterhood Rosh Chodesh program exploring
Jewish texts on gratitude as we draw closer to Thanksgiving.

Dinner will be served @ $15.00 per person.

Discussion on Israel with Sisterhood

Tuesday, November 21st // 7:00 pm // CBI

Please join us for this discussion moderated by Lisa Friedman and Barbara
Ismail. We will unpack our questions about Israel's history and the current
situation, and will have an open forum to share and discuss our thoughts.

Our discussion will be based on Israel: A Simple Guide to The Most
Misunderstood Country on Earth, by Noa Tishby, which provides a clear and
readable account of Israel's history while debunking many misperceptions and
providing clear perspective for us to better understand Israel. We will
discuss ways in which we can be better equipped to enter conversations with
factual evidence that supports Israel and the Jewish people.

For more information or to RSVP, please contact Barbara Ismail at 973 462
5971 or <mailto:barbara.ismail at gmail.com> barbara.ismail at gmail.com

Death in Jewish Tradition and Lore with Len Hausman

Monday Mornings starting November 13th // 9:30 am // Zoom

There is no more uncomfortable subject than death, even more so in these
times. Rituals and practices around death are a window into a culture's
beliefs and views not just of death, but also of life. They can be viewed as
psychological defense mechanisms to soften the reality of death and pain of
loss for the bereaved. They function as guides to how a community supports
those in grief. While there is no one way to mourn, they offer a roadmap for
those who have lost a loved one.

Exploring what Jewish tradition has to say about death is fascinating. While
our rituals and practices have evolved some over the centuries, their basis
has not. We have centuries-old Halacha - Jewish law - surrounding death, but
there is also a fair dose of folklore and even superstition in the mix. And
surprisingly, a number of our rituals are also seen in the practices of
other cultures.

Thursday, November 16 // 4:30 pm // CBI

Grief has its own timetable. There is no point at which we stop grieving,
rather, over time our grief evolves.
At CBI we are offering a safe and supportive space in which to share our
memories, our challenges, and the wisdom of our experience. The group will
be facilitated by clergy and is open to both members and non- members.
Our topic:
Grief and Household Items: their favorite chair, their side of the bed,
their place at the table, books, mementos, and special photographs. There
are many reminders all around us that both comfort and pain us.
Let's talk!

Bookends With Sisterhood Returns!

Thursday, January 4th // 7:00 pm // In-person and on Zoom

We will be discussing Kantika by Elizabeth Graver.

Elizabeth Graver began writing her fifth novel,
<https://www.amazon.com/Kantika-Novel-Elizabeth-Graver/dp/1250869846>
Kantika, in 2014, but the Turkish Sephardic dressmaker at the heart of the
multi-generational, continent-spanning saga has been with her for a
lifetime. That’s because she was inspired by Graver’s maternal grandmother,
Rebecca (née Cohen) Baruch Levy.

The discussion will be moderated by Sara Sherman and Barbara Ismail.

CBI Israel Trip August 2024

We are praying that the war will have ended long before our scheduled trip.
By next summer, Israel will need to rebuild its economy. Tourism plays an
important role in its economy. There is no better time than now to register
for next summer's trip. Let's amass an inspiring synagogue delegation and
travel to Israel, to inject much needed funds into the tourism industry, to
show our support to the great citizens of Israel, to volunteer and give of
our time and efforts while we're there. Don't delay.
