Men's Club Paid-Up Breakfast

THIS Sunday, April 16 // 10:00 a.m. // CBI

Come enjoy brunch prepared by The Men's Club Chefs and hear Guest Speaker
Eric Holtz, the developer and coach of the miraculous 2021 Israeli Olympic
Baseball Team. This Sunday, you will have the pleasure of meeting Holtz, of
Westchester County, a man who actually lived out his dream. This dream
combined his love of Israel, expertise at playing and coaching baseball, and
his dogged determination to bring Israel baseball to the world stage - the
2021 World Olympics, in Tokyo.

He faced the fact that Israel produces few elite baseball players, Israel's
reaction to an Olympic team of mainly Jewish-American professional players,
Team Israel's challenges on the field to qualify for Tokyo, and a myriad of
additional obstacles which Coach Holtz needed to overcome. His roster
included approximately 11 major league players, 18 minor leaguers, 4 college
players, and 9 players from Israeli teams.

His motivational presentation will be perfect for those who are sports
enthusiasts, baseball coaches and players, interested in the Olympics, and,
of course, lovers of Israel.

Attention all Men's Club Members - Do not miss our big social event of the
season!

Yom HaShoah Candles

Please pick up your Ner Zikaron (remembrance candle) - a special Shoah
candle to be used in observance of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day),
provided to you by Men's Club of Congregation B'nai Israel. We encourage you
to light this candle in your home as Yom HaShoah begins at sundown on Monday
evening, April 17, 2023.

The Yellow CandleT was created in 1981 by FJMC clubs in Canada, New England
and elsewhere to keep alive the memory of the Six Million who perished in
the Shoah. The candle is modeled after a traditional Jewish memorial
Yahrzeit candle that burns for 24 hours during periods of mourning and on
the Yahrzeit anniversary of a family member. The candle's yellow wax serves
to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear during
the Nazi regime.

It is critical that we identify with victim and survivors the world over and
continue to educate our youth about the Holocaust. We hope you find that
lighting your Shoah candle adds meaning to your commemoration of those whose
lives were lost in the Holocaust.

The Power of Worshippers

Thursday, April 20th // 8:30 pm // Zoom

Please join us and Katherine Stewart, to discuss the rising threat of
today's Religious Right. This is a political movement that seeks to replace
our foundational democratic principles and institutions with a state
grounded on particular "approved" versions of religion, answering to what
some adherents call a "biblical worldview." The movement has already
succeeded in the takeover of our Supreme Court; it has degraded our politics
and is dividing the nation with religious animus. Stewart will pull back the
curtain on the movement's inner workings and leading personalities, exposing
a dense network of think tanks, advocacy groups, data operations, and
faith-based organizations embedded in a rapidly expanding community of
international alliances. This isn't a "culture war." It is a political war
over the future of democracy.

Katherine Stewart covers U.S. politics and policy, extremism, education, and
controversies at the intersection of faith and politics. Her work appears in
New York Times, the New York Review of Books, and the New Republic among
others. Her latest book, The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise
of Religious Nationalism, won the first place award for Excellence in
Nonfiction Books from the Religion News Association, as well as a Morris D.
Forkosch prize. Her previous book, The Good News Club, focused on the
religious right's efforts to infiltrate and undermine public education.

The Story of the State of Israel Through Its Music

Monday Mornings May 1-May 22 // 9:30 am // Zoom

Music is an ideal way to learn about a country's history and culture. In our
next 4-session module we will be celebrating Israel's 75th birthday as we
focus on the birth of the State of Israel and its first decade. The War of
Independence burst out anew on May 15th 1948 and did not end until March
1949. All the while the State was securing its foundations and welcoming
immigrants, many survivors of the Shoah. We will learn about this first
generation of an independent Israel through the music that tells their
story.

Each song presented will be accompanied by a commentary that includes the
story behind the song. We will review song lyrics in translation as we
explore their context and meaning. The Hebrew text will be available and we
will learn some key Hebrew words in the lyrics.

We will be listening mostly to original versions of these songs, but also at
times to updated versions. We will gain knowledge of leading vocalists and
groups so that we become familiar with a 'Who's Who' in the history of
Israeli song.

CBI Alliance for Sustainability

In response to the increasing challenges facing the environment, it's time
for CBI to do its part to preserve and protect the natural world. We'll be
focusing on environmental sustainability through a Jewish lens, exploring
how essential Jewish teachings can inform our pursuit of a healthy and just
world. We hope to involve all members of the CBI community from preschoolers
to seniors. We'll be evaluating what we can do as a community and as
individuals to integrate a commitment to sustainability into our lives, in
order to be true partners in the ongoing work of Tikkun Olam. We invite you
to be part of it!
