Emergency Relief for Turkey

As you have seen in the news, Turkey was struck by major earthquakes on
Monday. To date, over 17,000 lives have been lost and that number is
increasing by the hour. Thousands are also left homeless in severe winter
conditions and are in dire need. If you are looking for a way to help,
consider donating to BTF ( Bridge to Turkey Fund), which is a US-based
non-profit organization that partners with local NGOs to provide immediate
assistance with food, shelter, warmth and medical supplies.
The link to their site is <https://bridgetoturkiye.org>
https://bridgetoturkiye.org and contributions made to BTF are tax
deductible.

We can be proud of the immediate support provided by Israel to aid Turkey,
sending search and rescue teams within a day along with 15 cargo planes of
equipment and personnel to set up a field hospital.

THIS SHABBAT!

Reproductive Freedom is a Jewish Value

With reproductive rights at stake for millions, CBI is excited to join
National Council of Jewish Women and congregations across the country in
celebrating Repro Shabbat 2023.

Repro Shabbat takes place annually on the Shabbat when we read Parshat
Mishpatim because it contains the verses commonly used as the foundation of
Judaism's approach to reproductive health, rights, and justice. We will take
an opportunity to highlight what Jewish tradition teaches about reproductive
freedom, and to come together as a community to talk about the need to
preserve reproductive rights.

  *   *   *   *

We are pleased to have Dr. Johana Oviedo as our guest speaker during Shabbat
services on Saturday morning. Johana Oviedo, M.D. is an OB/GYN and abortion
provider in New York who specializes in family planning. She holds degrees
from Stanford and Columbia Universities and is also an advocate with
Physicians for Reproductive Health. Dr. Oviedo will be speaking about the
impact of the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision this past summer. She will
address reproductive healthcare both in her work as a physician in New York
as well as the efforts of colleagues who live in states where reproductive
health has been significantly impacted post-Dobbs. Dr. Oviedo will join us
for kiddush and will be available for a Q&A during that time.

For more information, click
<https://cbi-nj.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Repro-Shabbat-Feb-2023.pdf>
HERE.

The kiddush is sponsored by Lifelong Learning Committee and co-sponsored by
Sisterhood, Lisa Friedman, Men's Club and the Kiddush Committee.

CBI Chanting Circle

Sephardic and Mizrachi Melody Jam

Sunday, February 26 // 5:00 p.m. // CBI

This special edition of the chanting circle is going south of the border -
the Ashkenazi border, that is! We will be learning centuries-old melodies
from Spain, Portugal and the Sephardic Diaspora along with melodies from
Iraq, Persia, Yemen, and India. Some are done in a traditional
call-and-response style, while others will be done as a nigun, or put to
words you may know.

The intention of chanting is to awaken the divine in our hearts. It can
soothe the mind and at the very least is simply fun to do! No prior
knowledge of Hebrew or singing ability necessary . only a willingness to
join in spiritual community.

Kaddish: Its Origins, Evolution, and Music

Monday Mornings March 6-April 10 // 9:30 a.m. // Zoom

Kaddish is the most frequently recited prayer in all of Jewish liturgy
punctuating every service, up to 13 times daily! Yet it is the prayer most
closely associated with death and mourning. In this class we will be taking
a deep dive into the origins of this heartfelt prayer dating to the early
first millennium when it was a mainly said in the study hall. We will then
move on to an exploration of how Kaddish became a prayer for mourners, which
was a relatively late innovation - not becoming fully standard until the
16th century. In the final two of our six sessions we will learn about the
music of Kaddish, both in its traditional liturgical functions, and as focus
of musical settings from the Renaissance to the 21st century.

Presented by Len Hausman.

Barnabas Health Seeks Hospice Volunteers

The simplest gifts are often the most profound. If you've got time, empathy,
and compassion, you have the ability to support those nearing end of life.
If you have been searching for meaningful ways to spend your time, we invite
you to explore the role of hospice volunteer with Barnabas Health
Hospice/VNA Health Group.

Companionship visits in patient's homes or facilities in Essex or Hudson
Counties, administrative projects, or comforting phone calls from our West
Orange office, are just some of the ways in which our volunteers support
patients and their families. A Specialized 16-hour Training will be provided
by members of the Barnabas Health Hospice Team/VNAHG Hospice Team, over the
course of 4 weeks, in our office in West Orange.

For more information please contact:

Pauline De Palma, BSW Director Volunteer Services (732) 224-6933

Do you know of someone in our CBI Community who is celebrating a simcha,

gave birth to a child or grandchild, is ill, has been hospitalized or
suffered the loss of a loved one? The easiest way to let the clergy and
staff know is to email: <mailto:lscaregiver48 at gmail.com>

clergy, main office and Caring Committee.)

We thank our amazing Sisterhood volunteers who coordinate all of these
efforts!
