Emergency Relief for Turkey
As you have seen in the news, Turkey was struck by major earthquakes on
Monday. To date, over 17,000 lives have been lost and that number is
increasing by the hour. Thousands are also left homeless in severe winter
conditions and are in dire need. If you are looking for a way to help,
consider donating to BTF ( Bridge to Turkey Fund), which is a US-based
non-profit organization that partners with local NGOs to provide immediate
assistance with food, shelter, warmth and medical supplies.
The link to their site is <https://bridgetoturkiye.org>
https://bridgetoturkiye.org and contributions made to BTF are tax
deductible.
We can be proud of the immediate support provided by Israel to aid Turkey,
sending search and rescue teams within a day along with 15 cargo planes of
equipment and personnel to set up a field hospital.

Blood Libel: On the Trail of an Anti-Semitic Myth
Thursday, February 16th // 8:30 p.m. // Zoom
In 2019, a shooter of the synagogue in Poway near San Diego invoked the
story of Simon of Trent, a Christian boy whose death March 1475 led to one
of the most notorious trials of Jews in European history, as one of the
reasons why he decided to attack and kill Jews in California. Since the
Middle Ages, the death of a Christian child often resulted in violence
against Jews. While other anti-Jewish libels waned, this one has endured.
Magda Teter's talk will unpack the enduring power of this libel, and explain
how and why it came to be rooted in first Christian imagination in Europe
and then to reach contemporary America and the Middle East.
This lecture is presented by Magda Teter, a Professor of History and the
Shvidler Chair of Judaic Studies at Fordham University. She is the author of
Jews and Heretics in Catholic Poland (2005), Sinners on Trial (2011), Blood
Libel: On the Trail of An Antisemitic Myth (2020), and of dozens of articles
in English, Hebrew, Italian, and Polish. Her book Blood Libel won the 2020
National Jewish Book Award, The George L. Mosse Prize from the American
Historical Association, and the Ronald Bainton Prize from the Sixteenth
Century Society. Her new book Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots
of Antisemitism and Racism is forthcoming from Princeton University Press in
2023. Teter has received prestigious fellowships, including from the John
Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Cullman Center for Scholars and
Writers at the New York Public Library, the NEH. She is currently the
President of the American Academy of Jewish Research.

Reproductive Freedom is a Jewish Value
With reproductive rights at stake for millions, CBI is excited to join
National Council of Jewish Women and congregations across the country in
celebrating Repro Shabbat 2023 -- Friday and Saturday, February 17-18.
Repro Shabbat takes place annually on the Shabbat when we read Parshat
Mishpatim because it contains the verses commonly used as the foundation of
Judaism's approach to reproductive health, rights, and justice. We will take
an opportunity on this Shabbat to highlight what Jewish tradition teaches
about reproductive freedom, and to come together as a community to talk
about the need to preserve reproductive rights.

We are pleased to have Dr. Johana Oviedo as our guest speaker during Shabbat
services on Saturday morning. Johana Oviedo, M.D. is an OB/GYN and abortion
provider in New York who specializes in family planning. She holds degrees
from Stanford and Columbia Universities and is also an advocate with
Physicians for Reproductive Health. Dr. Oviedo will be speaking about the
impact of the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision this past summer. She will
address reproductive healthcare both in her work as a physician in New York
as well as the efforts of colleagues who live in states where reproductive
health has been significantly impacted post-Dobbs. Dr. Oviedo will join us
for kiddush and will be available for a Q&A during that time.

Special Double-Header Event
Purim in a Scroll . Instead of a Book
&
Return of CBI Torah Scroll Celebration
Monday, February 27 // 7:00 p.m. at CBI
Our special evening program begins with an intriguing discussion just in
time for Purim about how the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther) became written
as a scroll. Our Guest Speaker is Soferet (scribe) Julie Seltzer.
The lecture will also be accessible on Zoom (evening minyan ID).
Then, after minyan, join us for a brief ceremony and dessert reception as we
welcome back our Sefer Torah that Julie will bring back to us after
repairing.
Julie is a Torah scribe and educator and is one of the first women known to
have written a Torah.
CBI Chanting Circle
Sephardic and Mizrachi Melody Jam
Sunday, February 26 // 5:00 p.m. // CBI
This special edition of the chanting circle is going south of the border -
the Ashkenazi border, that is! We will be learning centuries-old melodies
from Spain, Portugal and the Sephardic Diaspora along with melodies from
Iraq, Persia, Yemen, and India. Some are done in a traditional
call-and-response style, while others will be done as a nigun, or put to
words you may know.
The intention of chanting is to awaken the divine in our hearts. It can
soothe the mind and at the very least is simply fun to do! No prior
knowledge of Hebrew or singing ability necessary . only a willingness to
join in spiritual community.
