Mazel Tov, Juliette!

Juliette is a lifelong member of CBI. She started off as a member of the community with an unforgettable baby naming in the snow with Cantor Wallach. Juliette is currently a 7th grader at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy. She enjoys painting, chatting with her friends and spending time with her dog. She is an avid sports fan and loves the Islanders, Giants and Yankees (much to her dear friend, David Touger's chagrin). Juliette loves spending time with her family, especially her younger sister Rebecca and many cousins. Her favorite place though is Perlman Camp, where she has been going since 2019. Juliette would like to thank Cantor Wallach for her unending excitement and support since Juliette chose this parsha. She is also grateful to Paula Touger for her friendship and extra time helping to get ready for the big day. In addition, Juliette would like to thank Rabbi Isenberg for discussing her dvar torah and the meaning of becoming a bat mitzvah. Juliette and her family would especially like to thank all the members of CBI who have been the foundation of a home and community here in New Jersey.

With reproductive rights at stake for millions, CBI is excited to join National Council of Jewish Women and congregations across the country in celebrating Repro Shabbat 2023/5783.

Reproductive Freedom is a Jewish Value!

Repro Shabbat takes place annually on the Shabbat when we read Parshat Mishpatim because it contains the verses commonly used as the foundation of Judaism’s approach to reproductive health, rights, and justice. We will take an opportunity on this Shabbat to highlight what Jewish tradition teaches about reproductive freedom, and to come together as a community to talk about the need to preserve reproductive rights.

Learn with us! Pray with us! Sing with us!

Special Double-Header Event

Purim in a Scroll … Instead of a Book

&

Return of CBI Torah Scroll Celebration

Monday, February 27 // 7:00 p.m. at CBI

The lecture will also be accessible on Zoom (evening minyan ID).

Then, after minyan, join us for a brief ceremony and dessert reception as we welcome back our Sefer Torah that Julie will bring back to us after repairing.
Julie is a Torah scribe and educator and is one of the first women known to have written a Torah.

This Week’s Tip from…

The CBI Alliance for Sustainability

"There will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.” The World Economic Forum

Every statistic I see says that very little of the plastic we use gets recycled and of that which gets recycled, very little gets made into something new. Yet, it is almost impossible to avoid plastic--it is in our clothing, our food containers, our cars, our electronic devices and on and on and on. Both when these items break down, as well as when they are being made from pellets of virgin plastic, microplastics are released into our waters, our air, our food, our bodies. It is not yet known how harmful this might be, although Tamara Galloway, an ecotoxicologist says, "I think it is fair to say the potential risk might be high" <https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01143-3> https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01143-3. How do we reduce the amount of plastic in our lives? How about ditching the jugs of laundry detergent? They are mostly water, and all that water weighs a lot and takes up space, raising the cost of shipping the detergent to your favorite store. The jugs are almost impossible to clean and therefore cannot be easily recycled. We've been using laundry sheets for several years. They look similar to dryer sheets but are dehydrated detergent. When we bought our first envelope (paper, mailed to the store in a cardboard box), we asked a friend with an active three-year-old boy to help us test this product. She gave it a thumbs up. If you would like to try these laundry sheets, email one of us at <mailto:us--tinahburk at gmail.com> tinahburk at gmail.com or <mailto:neilnschneider at gmail.com> neilnschneider at gmail.com.

CBI Alliance for Sustainability

In response to the increasing challenges facing the environment, it’s time for CBI to do its part to preserve and protect the natural world. We’ll be focusing on environmental sustainability through a Jewish lens, exploring how essential Jewish teachings can inform our pursuit of a healthy and just world. We hope to involve all members of the CBI community from preschoolers to seniors. We’ll be evaluating what we can do as a community and as individuals to integrate a commitment to sustainability into our lives, in order to be true partners in the ongoing work of Tikkun Olam. We invite you to be part of it!

Jewish Art Talks with Janet Mandel

Join us for The Cone Sisters: Collecting the Modern Masters

Thursday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Please register for each event individually to receive the link for the corresponding date.

Claribel and Etta Cone amassed a remarkable collection of masterpiece paintings and sculpture from the 19th and 20th Centuries that they bequeathed to the Baltimore Museum of Art. This talk requires two parts to tell the story of great art in the context of the fascinating social history of these two Jewish sisters. The breadth of their collection includes works by Matisse, Picasso, Cézanne, Gauguin, Pissarro, Renoir, Van Gogh, Courbet, and Delacroix, among others. The sisters also amassed an amazing array of textiles, jewelry, furniture and other decorative arts, as well as African art, Japanese prints, and antique ivories and bronzes. Claribel and Etta Cone, in order to enrich their lives, enriched the lives of us all with their legacy.
