Monday Morning Modules Return!

Judaica In & At the Museum

January 16 // 9:30 a.m. // Zoom

This talk, presented by Linda Sandhaus, begins with the question: Why do so
few American art museums include Jewish ritual art? To answer this question,
we need to start with the kunstkammers (cabinets of curiosity) of 17th
century Europe and trace the origins of art museums and Jewish museums
throughout Europe and the United States. Why was Jewish art treated
differently from the art of all other cultures? And what do we mean by
Jewish art anyway?

Alphabet/Alef Bet:

Hebrew and Semitic Roots in the English Language

January 23 and 30 // 9:30 a.m. // Zoom

English is an Indo-European language and Hebrew is a Northwest Semitic
language. Strictly speaking, they could not be more different. But as 'no
man is an island,' so too no language is an island. As archeologists in
recent years have found, in antiquity there was much more commerce and trade
between the Middle East and other lands than was once imagined. And as goods
migrate, often enough the words describing them migrate as well. Presented
by Len Hausman, you are invited to discover English words whose origins, via
the Romance languages, may well lie the languages of the Levant - including
Hebrew!

Bookends with Sisterhood

Read, learn, and discuss with us!

Wednesday, January 25 // 7:00 p.m. // Zoom

Bookish People by Susan Coll is an entertaining novel set over one week in a
Washington DC bookstore. Narrated by two very different women and filled
with literary and political references, it is a rom com filled with a
diverse multigenerational cast of people who sell books, write books, love
books and/or people who love the people who sell, write and/or love books.

Discussion will be facilitated by Sara Sherman.

This Week's Tip from.

The CBI Alliance for Sustainability

"There is no such thing as "away." When we throw anything away, it must go
somewhere." - Annie Leonard

I was at TD Bank today and had to borrow a pen. The sign on the box of pens
told me it had been made of recycled water bottles. I know my reaction was
supposed to be FABULOUS! But all I could think was, when the ink runs out,
this, too, will end up in the garbage. According to NPR (
<https://www.npr.org/2022/10/24/1131131088/recycling-plastic-is-practically-
impossible-and-the-problem-is-getting-worse>
https://www.npr.org/2022/10/24/1131131088/recycling-plastic-is-practically-i
mpossible-and-the-problem-is-getting-worse), only 5% of plastic is actually
turned into new things. So, let each of us resolve to reduce our carbon
footprint in 2023 by cutting the amount of plastic we use. We have taken
ziploc bags off our grocery list and are investing in more reusable silicone
storage bags. Over the coming year, we'll share more ideas on how to reduce
our use of plastic. If anyone wants to share their ideas, please email us at
<mailto:tinahburk at gmail.com> tinahburk at gmail.com or
<mailto:neilnschneider at gmail.com> neilnschneider at gmail.com.

CBI Alliance for Sustainability

In response to the increasing challenges facing the environment, it's time
for CBI to do its part to preserve and protect the natural world. We'll be
focusing on environmental sustainability through a Jewish lens, exploring
how essential Jewish teachings can inform our pursuit of a healthy and just
world. We hope to involve all members of the CBI community from preschoolers
to seniors. We'll be evaluating what we can do as a community and as
individuals to integrate a commitment to sustainability into our lives, in
order to be true partners in the ongoing work of Tikkun Olam. We invite you
to be part of it!
